Why do need Mindfulness Training in schools?

According to the results of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2022, which evaluates the reading, mathematics, and science literacy skills of 15-year-old students every three years, conducted by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Turkey ranks below the OECD average in Mathematics, Science, and Reading. In PISA 2022, Turkey’s average reading skills decreased by 10 points compared to 2018.

In response to these results, the Ministry of National Education has implemented various measures to improve reading skills. The passing grade in Turkish language courses in middle schools has been raised from 45 to 70. Multiple-choice questions in primary schools have been replaced with an exam system that supports listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

The effects of all these changes will be evaluated collectively after the process. However, it is emphasized that to increase the attention of students in the digital age and instill a love for reading in them, more effort and projects are essential.

According to an article published in the December 2021 issue of the Trends in Neuroscience and Education journal, in-class physical activity and mindfulness practices were found to have positive effects on children’s attention, reading comprehension skills, and self-esteem. By providing mindfulness training for students, teachers and parents in schools, we can bring together knowledge and wisdom. If we aspire to create reforms in education, it is essential to strike a balance in establishing this harmony.
