Discover the Heart of School

We refer to schools as ‘’nests of knowledge’’.  Yes, knowledge is necessary for our children whom we try to prepare for the future, but this knowledge will be reduced to numbers and competition results unless nourished with wisdom. Schools are successful to the extent that they support each student on the path to self-discovery.

Can schools be transformational insititutions that support each student in finding themselves? The answer is yes. It is possible for schools to rediscover their heart, revive the internal motivation and curiosity in students.

The Heart of School aims to bring students, teachers, and parents together for the same purpose, focusing on mindfulness and community service activities at the center of education.

Who is She? What Does She Do?

Esra Tacir Göynügüzel

A mother of a single child, born in Ankara and raised in Şanlıurfa. She used to collect her dreams written on paper in boxes. In the largest of those boxes, there was a dream to become a teacher. She graduated from Istanbul University with a degree in English teaching and completed her master's degree in Teaching English to Non-Native Speakers at Aston University. She taught English at ENKA Schools for 22 years. She and her student and colleague Gabriel dreamed with young people in the ``DREAMCATCHERS`` club and accompanied them in social responsibility projects. She tried to contribute to the school climate by establishing a self-compassion and yoga center at school. After completing the yoga teacher training program with Chris Chaves, she participated in the Yin Yoga teacher training program with Berivan Aslan Sungur. She completed the training for ``Children and Youth`` yoga with Gökçe Akyıldız. She completed the Mindfulness Education for Children and Teens with the Eline Snel Method in the Netherlands. She completed the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Trainer program at the Mindful Academy Solterano. She loves being a student and is currently reading about psychology. She continues to collect dreams in her boxes.

Why Do Children Need Mindfulness Practices?

Responsibilities, external influences, and technology weaken this inherent skill in children over the course of their growth. The increased use of technology during the pandemic negatively affected attention skills. Mindfulness practices, especially for adolescents in the ongoing developmental stage, support them in regaining awareness skills.

We are the students, teachers, and parents who are battered between the speed and goals in education.  We live in an  environment where competition and exam culture harm the student’s ‘effort to be oneself,’. However, when we free schools from the excess of speed and goals and remember that the ‘School’ has a heart, we will take a step forward.

We believe that academic studies will only gain meaning when individual and collective consciousness are supported. A student who acquires this awareness will become ready to discover their place in society and choose a field where they can make an impact. That’s why we emphasize awareness and community service activities right in the middle of the ‘Heart of School.

Inspirations

There is a hierarchy of human needs. After our basic biological needs are met, social and emotional needs take precedence. However, we can only reach intellectual and cognitive pursuits after addressing matters of the heart. The art of paying attention, mindfulness, is a path to academic success.

Mussey, 2019

My communication with others will always be incomplete until I decipher my own language.

Ege Soley (Yakın)

Meditation changes the brain.

Sara Lazar

Beginner's mind has many possibilities, but the master's mind has few.

Suzuki Roshi

Deliberately stopping all outward activities and, perhaps for the first time in your adult life, simply sitting or lying down, allowing yourself to be fully present in the slow progression of the moment without any plans beyond just trying, is a significant event.

John Kabat Zinn

My communication with others will always be incomplete until I decipher my own language.

Ege Soley (Close)

For children, there is neither past nor future; they enjoy the present moment, which is something that rarely concerns us.

Jean de La Bruyere (Characters)
